Covid-19, an Eightieth Birthday and Politics in Nigeria

Covid-19, an Eightieth Birthday and Politics in Nigeria

By: Babafemi A. Badejo, Ph.D

July 3, 2020 was the 80th birthday anniversary of Prof. Adebola Kukoyi. The Yoruba or better still, the Ijebu sub-group, tended to have loud “owambe” (literally: it’s there i.e., the party is rich in all respects: attendance, loud live-bands, food and drinks, elegant competitive dressing: including in uniformed fabric with diverse designs), to mark landmark birthdays.

George Floyd: Yank Their Feet Off Your Necks

George Floyd: Yank Their Feet Off Your Necks

By: Babafemi A. Badejo, Ph.D

Many human beings are rightly condemning the asphyxiation of George Floyd to death over what must have been a painful and agonizing death as he shouted: “I can’t breathe” and called on his dead mum to help out. But Derek Chauvin, the police official (better expression than “officer”, which makes them feel they are on top of people they are to serve), held on with his knees chocking his catch of the day like a leopard would do to a prized gazelle just caught. Derek’s colleagues: J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Kiernan Lane helped restrain Floyd, while Tou Thao stood guard and ensured no interference by bystanders as they all enjoyed the gruesome snuffing of life out of George Floyd that dragged on for 8 minutes, 46 seconds. George Floyd was neither the first nor the last to face the “George Floyd Moment”. In Atlanta, Rayshard Brooks faced it on June 12, 2020 and so did Eric Garner on July 17, 2014. He also had cried: “I can’t breathe” as he got asphyxiated by Daniel Pantaleo in New York.

Covid-19 and Mallam Abba Kyari

Babafemi A. Badejo, Ph.D

Covid-19 and Mallam Abba Kyari

Its family name is Coronavirus. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), gave its first name as Covid-19. The name is realized from an amalgamation of letters “co” from corona; “vi” from virus and letter “d” from disease. And since the assumption was that the mutation from bat to human or if you like from a lab (I hesitate to say which lab as we do not know many things as at today), took place in 2019, the last two figures of the year got added. Voila, Covid-19!

Today, knowledge on the index case on planet Earth is less crucial in comparison to finding ameliorative life-saving answers. Viruses have always lived with human beings and unlike bacteria, humans have not found ways to cure viruses with exception of vaccines to incapacitate them. The immune system naturally fights off viruses. Opportunistic diseases kill when viruses attack humans and the immune  system meant to fight diseases is compromised hence unable to fight it off. Cor Covid-19,  a vaccine is being sought but probably not realizable until 12 months from now at the earliest.
